- More sugar, or starch in the “more” our pancreas works to produce “more” Insulin. This is for the normal healthy person, or one with type 2 Diabetes.
- In Type 1 Diabetes, the pancreas is unable to produce Insulin, so it must be given by injections. Advanced stage of type 2 may need insulin because the sugar level gets too high, and no amount of dietary control, or exercise, or oral medication to stimulate insulin production or removal of insulin resistance can work.
- True type 1 Diabetes, in the absence of Insulin, will show higher & higher levels of blood sugar even with the smallest amount of food or lack of exercise. If patient is at a HONEYMOON DIABETES TYPE 1, reset of diet & exercise may reverse this type.
- After being diagnosed as having Diabetes type 2, with high levels of Fasting Blood Sugar, (above140mg, or 7.5mmol/L), 2hr.PostPrandial sugar (above150mg, or 8.0mmol/L), and high HbA1c (above 6.4) oral medications are prescribed.
- If we are accustomed to eating large portions, and do not decide to make the slightest change in eating, then the medications will go more and more up to push our sugar levels down, and our hunger feelings go up. So, our weight goes up also.
- MAKING THE CHANGE: involves eating less, exercising more, and doctors’ care and caution not to overshoot. When the patient recognizes that the sugar level is heading to hypoglycemic levels, he will immediately take something sweet, and next day reduce the amount of treatment to prevent the recurrence of fainting, sweating, abdominal pains, dizziness etc. Two things:
- The patient will have to obtain a glucometer and know the values.
- He/She must contact the Doctor to discuss relevant changes with confidence. DOCTORS WILL DO ALL LAB TESTS TO PROTECT HEART, KIDNEYS, EYES AND LIMBS.
- ENJOYING THE CHANGE TO REDUCED Rx, OR NO DIABETES MEDS. I used to wake up feeling hungry in the middle of the night, being on oral anti-diabetic medication, and because of knowing too much, – the fear of hypoglycemia – I would have gotten up, head to the fridge, take 1⁄2 glass milk & few biscuits to feel safe. So, my weight went up by 14 lbs. Since reversal & weight change from 158 to 144, and no anti-diabetic Rx. There are no more night fears, I just take a little antacid, half a glass of water, & easily drop off to sleep. CAUTION & FEAR ALONE can force one to wake up frequently to pass urine & feel hungry. Tests have remained normal for 1& 1⁄2 yrs.
- TRICKY QUESTION: “If I am borderline with overweight and slight elevation of Hb. A1c, can I work my way down to no Rx. by diet & exercise alone?” Answer “Yes, you can! I assume, you already have symptoms and signs of diabetes. With the help of a dietician and understanding your sugar/starch intake to be reduced, and regularity of exercise, you can reverse to get normal values. By 1 month we expect F.B.S. to be 100 mg, or 5.5 mmol/L, 2hr. P.P.S. to be 120 mg, or 6.5 mmol/L, and A1C to be below 6.0. Your weight being reduced will also help to make you feel better. Blood Pressure will also be better regulated. Your close follow up will determine if you will need medication(s).
- THE MORE we get our control or balance of diet & exercise, sleep regulation, control of stresses, pains & infections, the LESS problems we shall have in managing our DIABETES, HYPERTENSION, OVERWEIGHT & ARTHRITIS.
- BY YOUR GRACE O LORD, THE LESS WE EAT AND THE MORE WE EXERCISE WE CAN KEEP ALIVE TO SERVE YOU, AND ALL MANKIND.
